Born from the bag

The iconic Bokomo Purity flour bag has a history in South African culture. We took that familiar branding — and turned it into a garment worth holding onto.

Here is a little history if you ever wondered where they originally came from:

During the depression from 1929 to around 1933, there was great poverty worldwide.  Mothers everywhere had to use their innovative skills and creativity to feed and dress their families.  Not only in South Africa, but also in Australia and the USA.  Flour used to be sold in fabric bags. These ladies processed the flour bags by washing and bleaching them to make them softer and whiter or order to make garments from them.

The first South African Bokomo pants (also known as Meelbroeke) were also made from the real Flour Bags, and if you bought one around 30 years ago, you might still have the original Meelbroek!  Nowadays the fabric is printed as there are no more bags like they used in the olden days and plastic and poly propylene is now used to make the bags.  The same fabric is still used, although a little stronger than that of the flour bags.

These kids dungarees might be a little stiff and hard when you buy them, mostly due to the colouring process, but after a wash or two, they become soft and before long, your kiddo will be living in them!
